From The Diamond Square to Entrepreneurship: A Lesson in Resilience

8 April 2025

When discussing entrepreneurship, we often consider innovation, investment, and strategy. However, an essential factor is frequently overlooked: resilience. And if there is a character in Catalan literature who exemplifies this concept better than anyone, it is Natàlia, the protagonist of Mercè Rodoreda’s The Diamond Square. Although the novel does not directly address business, its story mirrors the crises, challenges, and transformations that any entrepreneur may experience.

1. Facing Adversity Without Giving Up

When Natàlia marries Quimet, her life seems to follow a predetermined course. But she quickly finds herself trapped in a relationship she didn’t entirely choose and in a historical context (the Civil War) that completely disrupts her world. Similarly, an entrepreneur may have a clear plan, but external circumstances (economic crises, market changes, unforeseen competition) can put everything at stake. Entrepreneurial Reflection: We cannot control all circumstances, but we can control how we react to them. Natàlia adapts to every new situation, no matter how difficult, and eventually takes control of her life. Entrepreneurs must possess this flexible and resilient mindset to overcome obstacles.

2. The Ability to Reinvent Oneself

After the war, Natàlia has to start from scratch. She loses a lot, but she doesn’t let herself be defeated. She makes a living, adapts, works, and, over time, finds a way to rebuild her life. This process is exactly what many entrepreneurs experience after a failure. Entrepreneurial Reflection: Not all projects succeed on the first attempt. But this doesn’t signify the end; rather, it’s an opportunity to rethink the path and find a new way forward.

3. Making Your Own Decisions

Throughout the novel, we see how Natàlia evolves from a woman who accepts what is imposed upon her to a person who makes her own decisions. This evolution is essential for anyone who wants to embark on an entrepreneurial journey: one must stop following what others say and start charting their own course. Entrepreneurial Reflection: A good entrepreneur cannot live conditioned by fear or external opinions. They must learn to trust themselves, take risks, and assume responsibilities.

4. The Importance of a Support Network

Although Natàlia often finds herself alone, there are also people who help her get back on her feet when she needs it most. Entrepreneurs, like her, cannot succeed alone. Having mentors, collaborators, and a strong network of contacts is key to overcoming difficulties. Entrepreneurial Reflection: Networking and strategic alliances are essential for growth and overcoming crises. As the saying goes, “if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” The Diamond Square is not just a novel about the post-war period, but a universal story about the ability to overcome adversity. Anyone looking to undertake a project should read it with a new perspective: Natàlia teaches us that, no matter how difficult the path, there is always a way forward, so you can say; I am what I want to be!
